  • The film is based on Bethany Hamilton’s biographical book “Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board” (2004). The filmmakers also additionally interviewed her family to find out unpublished details of the story.
  • Bethany Hamilton herself (a professional American surfer, who gained fame as a shark attack victim in addition to her sporting achievements) served as a stunt double in the film.
  • The shark attack scene was filmed on the same beach where Hamilton was actually attacked. Hamilton was involved in the editing; she suggested filming the scene in a calm manner and said that everyone really remained calm during her accident.
  • During the filming of the scenes after the shark attack, AnnaSophia Robb wore a green sleeve on her left arm. Her arm was digitally removed from the frame using computer technology.
  • For filming, AnnaSophia Robb and Dennis Quaid had to learn to surf, while Helen Hunt already had some experience. Bethany Hamilton herself was AnnaSophia Robb's surfing coach.
