Until recently, the version owned by Corinth Films was considered the closest to Orson Welles’ (1915-1985) vision. In April 2006, a DVD set was released with three versions of the film: the version held by Corinth Films, the so-called “European version,” and a recently edited “complete version.” Each version contains footage or lines that are not present in the other two versions. During post-production, the film was taken from the director, so it is now unknown what he meant when he spoke about the film later on.
Shortly after the film's premiere, Maurice Bessy (1910-1993) wrote a novel based on it, "Mr. Arkadin"; Orson Welles is credited as the author, although he did not write a single line.
