What's left behind the scenes
- In preparation for the role, Ben Foster trained with professionals in survival skills away from civilization, as well as other useful skills.
- The last third of the film was shot in Oregon at a family-friendly nudist resort.
- When Ben Foster agreed to star in the film, he, along with director and screenwriter Debra Granik, removed about 40% of the lines from the script to make it more realistic.
- The recurring image of a seahorse in the film is a reference to Will's state. The cause of PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, lies in problems with the hippocampus (this is a part of the limbic system of the brain and the hippocampal formation), which in turn are caused by the amygdala, or the almond, i.e., the organ that causes fear in humans. The hippocampus is named so because of its resemblance to a seahorse.
