What's left behind the scenes

  • The famous Cal Neva Resort & Casino, once owned by Frank Sinatra (1915-1998), served as the prototype for the hotel in the film.
  • Hoping to avoid leaks to the press, the future film's director, Drew Goddard, showed the script only to the highest echelons of film companies. He would go to film executives with a tablet, let them read the script on the screen, and leave after receiving a rejection.
  • The hotel was built from scratch on the set, and the furniture and decorative elements were created specifically for the filming. Colors were chosen as follows: everything located in California was made mainly yellow and orange, while in Nevada it was purple and blue. The items in the middle were decorated in red, and green was practically absent from the film and only appeared at the very end.
  • Chris Hemsworth had to lose weight after filming Anthony and Joe Russo's 'Avengers: Infinity War' (2018) in order to begin filming this project.
  • The hotel set was built in such a way that enough light entered for filming.
  • All the actors involved in the film, and director Drew Goddard, agreed to a reduction in their fees, just to finish the film.
  • “El Royale” is named after a hotel. In reality, it’s both a motel and a hotel. In a hotel, room entrances are located inside the building, while in a motel, room entrances are located outside.
  • The image of Billy Lee, played by Chris Hemsworth, is based to some extent on Charles Manson (1934-2017). The allusions to murders that are heard in the film are a reference to the murder of actress Sharon Tate (1943-1969) by members of the Manson cult.
  • It is claimed that a hidden film contains an episode of an affair involving a highly respected, but now deceased, senator. As the film takes place in 1969, this is most likely a reference to Bobby Kennedy (1925-1968), who was murdered a year earlier.
