What's left behind the scenes

Before Claire Foy was cast as Lisbeth Salander, negotiations were held with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson. The same actresses were also in negotiations before filming the previous film. In addition, Sony Pictures Entertainment considered offering the role of Lisbeth to Felicity Jones and Alicia Vikander.
Stieg Larsson (1954-2004) planned to write 10 books about Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, and his notes are kept by his civil partner and public figure Eva Gabrielsson, with whom Larsson lived from 1974 until his death. Their marriage was never officially registered, so Larsson's father and brother own the rights to his literary legacy. The Larssons and Gabrielsson were never able to reach an agreement regarding future books, and the Larsson family hired another writer. This film is based on the novel of the same name – the fourth book in the series and the first not written by the late Stieg Larsson.
