Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.
What's left behind the scenes
- When James Gunn was removed from his position as director of the upcoming blockbuster, actor Dave Bautista stated that he would terminate his contract if the screenplay written by Gunn wasn't used in the film.
- After Hanna was fired, a large-scale campaign in his support unfolded online, and a petition to reinstate Hanna as director garnered over 30,000 signatures. Many celebrities also spoke out in support of Hanna, including the entire cast of the film "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014) and others.
- The film set a record for the number of prosthetics used in the actors' makeup. Over 23,000 prosthetics were used to make up over 100 actors.
- Cosmo in this film is voiced by a woman in memory of Laika (1954-1957), the first animal to go into space.
- James Gunn based the images of the High Evolutionary and his Anti-Earth on the 1896 novel "The Island of Doctor Moreau" by H.G. Wells (1866-1946). Gunn is a big fan of Earl S. Kenton's (1896-1980) 1932 film adaptation of Wells' novel, "The Island of Lost Souls".
- George MacKay, Regé-Jean Page, Ismael Cruz Cordova, and Aaron Pierre auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock.
