Short description
An epic tale of three brothers and their father living in the remote wilderness of 1900s USA and how their lives are affected by nature, history, war, and love.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Jim Harrison's novel "Legends of the Fall" (1979).
  • Johnny Depp was considered for the role of Tristan.
  • The word "fall" in the film's title means not only "autumn" but also directly alludes to the biblical "fall from grace." Meanwhile, in a number of countries (including Russia, in particular), a similar idiom was not found and the title was translated directly – as "Legends of the Fall."
  • Calgary, Canada was chosen as the filming location, hoping for a lack of rain, but it started raining as soon as filming began.
  • It took director and producer Edward Zwick 17 years to bring the project to the filming stage.
  • During the filming of the scene where Karina Lombard's character is shot and Tristan, played by Brad Pitt, is beaten by a police officer, the actor portraying the officer went overboard with the baton and left Pitt with a black eye. Shortly after, filming moved to the tennis match scene at the beginning of the film, and lines had to be added to the script to explain Pitt's bruise.
  • According to Brad Pitt, he was originally supposed to play Tristan Ludlow in old age in the epilogue, and was even made up accordingly, but the result did not satisfy anyone. That's why Doug Seuss, a bear trainer (of Bart the bear), played the role instead.
  • In the scene where Henry Thomas's character dies, he has blood on his left cheek, but in subsequent shots it sometimes disappears and then reappears.
  • The film is based on Jim Harrison's novel “Legends of the Fall” (1979).
