What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place from June 15 to October 16, 1992.
  • Director Adrian Lyne was initially opposed to casting Woody Harrelson in the lead role, but changed his mind after seeing Harrelson in Ron Shelton's sports comedy 'White Men Can't Jump' (1992). Harrelson himself mentioned in an interview that he felt awkward filming with Demi Moore, as he was friends with her then-husband, Bruce Willis.
  • Director Adrian Lyne and Demi Moore often argued on set about various aspects of her character, and Woody Harrelson had to act as a mediator. Lyne, in particular, insisted that Moore should show the vulnerability of her character, while the actress vehemently disagreed. It was only during editing that Lyne suddenly realized that Moore had been demonstrating vulnerability in her portrayal all along, after which he apologized to the actress.
  • During the auction scene, Robert Redford's character was supposed to stand up and leave the room. This scene had to be filmed with multiple takes because Redford repeatedly missed his cue, captivated by the auctioneer played by Sir Billy Connolly.
  • The tears of Demi Moore's character in the flashback scene of Robert Redford's character were completely genuine. Before filming began, Moore had no idea what her scene partner would be talking about.
  • After reading the script, Demi Moore was unsure whether to take on the role. She was embarrassed by the love scenes and nudity, even though she had previously modeled for pornographic magazines before becoming an actress. She eventually agreed to the role, but only on the condition that she would be present during the editing of the intimate scenes, and if any of them seemed too explicit, they would be cut. She found nothing too revealing during editing, deciding that all these scenes could be more accurately described as erotic than pornographic.
  • Halle Berry expressed interest in appearing in this film, but was denied even an audition, as the filmmakers feared her presence in the cast would add an unnecessary racial subtext to the script. In fact, in Jack Engelhard's original novel, which served as the literary source for the screenplay, Redford's character was Arab and Harrelson's character was Jewish.
