Short description
When mankind beams a radio signal into space, a reply comes from ‘Planet G’, in the form of several alien crafts that splash down in the waters off Hawaii. Lieutenant Alex Hopper is a weapons officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones, part of an international naval coalition which becomes the world's last hope for survival as they engage the hostile alien force of unimaginable strength. While taking on the invaders, Hopper must also try to live up to the potential that his brother, and his fiancée's father—an Admiral—expect of him.
What's left behind the scenes
- Jeremy Renner was supposed to play Alex Hopper, but left the project in favor of "The Master" (2012) to play one of the main roles, but things ultimately didn't work out with that project either.
- Teresa Palmer and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley auditioned for the role of Sam.
- Filming took place on the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Oahu, in Sherman Oaks (Los Angeles), on Playa Del Rey beach, and in the city of Baton Rouge.
- Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård is the only one of the film's main creators who served in the military. He was drafted at 19 and spent 18 months in an anti-terrorist unit.
- A literal translation of the title Battleship is 'battleship'. Today, ships of this class are considered impractical for modern combat and have been removed from naval fleets.
- The main caliber of a battleship is the 406mm Mark 7 gun, adopted for service in 1943. Battleships of the Iowa class were armed with installations featuring this type of gun. It is considered one of the best battleship artillery guns in the world.
