What's left behind the scenes

  • Green Lantern was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell in All-American Comics #16 (July 1940).
  • The main contenders for the role of Green Lantern, in addition to Ryan Reynolds, were Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake. Sam Worthington, Chris Pine, and Jared Leto could also have landed the lead role.
  • Hugo Weaving, Jackie Earle Haley, and Geoffrey Rush were considered for the role of Sinestro (Mark Strong).
  • The Green Lantern costumes were created on a computer: the actors wore motion capture suits instead.
  • It is known that Ryan Reynolds, who played the lead role, strongly disliked the film. According to his own admission, he didn't get along with director Martin Campbell and was even pleased that the film received poor reviews and had disappointing box office results. His joy stemmed from the fact that he absolutely did not want to return to the role of Green Lantern. In Tim Miller’s science fiction action film “Deadpool” (2016), he speaks negatively about Green Lantern, and in David Leitch’s sequel “Deadpool 2” (2018), he travels back in time to prevent himself from taking on the role of Green Lantern.
  • In preparation for his role, Peter Sarsgaard spent a lot of time with a biologist from Tulane University, whom he described as remarkably eccentric. They worked together on the text of a lecture that Sarsgaard’s character delivers in the film.
  • One of the Green Lanterns wears an emblem in the shape of a bell on his chest, not a lantern. This is because there is so much light in his world that its inhabitants do not need sight. Since he is blind, he uses sound instead of sight, unlike the others.
  • Preparing for the role of Carol Ferris, Blake Lively trained on aerial rigging setups created for Lana and Lilly Wachowski's sci-fi action film "The Matrix" (1999). She was assisted by acrobats from "Cirque du Soleil", and the training was supervised by renowned stunt coordinator Gary Powell.
  • Applying Temuera Morrison's makeup took between 4 and 5 hours.
  • Initially, this was intended to be the first film in a Justice League franchise, and one early script draft even featured a cameo appearance by Clark Kent, also known as Superman. This idea was abandoned when the film underperformed at the box office, and the Justice League franchise didn't begin until Zack Snyder's sci-fi action film "Man of Steel" (2013).
  • The correct hair color for Blake Lively's character was found only after 14 attempts.
  • The Green Lantern costumes were created on a computer: actors wore "motion capture" suits instead.
