Director Todd Strauss-Schulson rewatched over 90 American romantic comedies in 2 weeks and noted the most common clichés: New York, Starbucks coffee, a kiss in the rain, arched windows, and a jacuzzi.
The filming of the actors performing the song "Express Yourself" was preceded by only 4 hours of rehearsals.
In the scene near the police station, the building where the series "Friends" (1994-2004) was filmed can be seen in the background.
Preliminary screenings showed that focus groups really enjoyed the musical numbers, so director Todd Strauss-Schulson decided to film a complex musical number with dancing for the entire cast for the film's finale.
The film contains over 120 references to romantic comedies – from costumes and musical themes to dialogue.
