What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Nicole Kidman was supposed to play Meg, and Hayden Panettiere was cast as Sarah. Shortly before filming began, Hayden was replaced by Kristen Stewart. Eighteen days into filming, Kidman dropped out of the project due to complications from a knee injury sustained while filming 'Moulin Rouge' (2001). David Fincher suggested to the studio that the project be shut down, but the studio executives decided otherwise. The lead role was offered to Jodie Foster, who was scheduled to head the jury at the Cannes Film Festival at the time. Jodie turned down the trip to Cannes to work with Fincher, with whom she was supposed to star in 'The Game' (1997), but her role was then rewritten and went to Sean Penn. Foster had only nine days to prepare for the role.

- Jodie Foster was pregnant during filming. As the filming was delayed, they had to wait for Foster to give birth and be able to return to work.

- In the scene where the intruders try to release gas into the room, it accumulates near the ceiling. Main gas methane would indeed rise. However, the film uses bottled gas, i.e., propane or butane, which are heavier than air and would realistically sink to the floor.
