What's left behind the scenes

The film is based on the short story “Why Don't You Dance?” by Raymond Carver, an American writer and poet. Director Dan Rush previously asked for permission from Carver's widow, Tess Gallagher, before expanding the story and adding additional characters.
The name of the prop master, Keith Moski, appears several times in the yearbook that Nick is looking through when he finds the note from Dalila. Also, some other photos and names are used multiple times in the yearbook.
The towel on the back of the chair behind Will Ferrell slips down and then reappears on the back during his conversation with Rebecca Hall about her husband.
After Samantha offers Nick Valium for his withdrawal symptoms, a yellow kayak (which we previously saw Nick drag to the far side of the yard in one of the earlier scenes) appears behind her in close proximity to the makeshift living room. The kayak was moved there so that Samantha could later hide her beer inside it. Then, in the morning, when he is coming out of his stupor, the kayak is back in the place where Nick originally left it.
The motionless camera operator is reflected in the glass shower door in Nick's bathroom (lower left corner of the frame). The scene takes place near the end of the film, after Nick retrieves the keys to the new locks and regains access to his house.
The Band's song "I Shall Be Released" was never the first track on any side of an album, unlike as depicted in the film. It was the final track on their 1968 album "Music from Big Pink".
