What's left behind the scenes

  • Michael Jackson's estate (1958-2009) did not grant permission to use his songs, video recordings, etc., in the film, so there are no songs performed by him in the film. Nevertheless, the composition “Beat It” is mentioned once in the dialogue. The so-called “moonwalk” is shown performed by ordinary people in a scene where Jackson in a helmet walks down the street.
  • Comforting the children, Michael sings them “Smile,” a song written by Charles Chaplin (1889-1977) and set to an instrumental theme from the film “Modern Times” (1936). He wrote his own cover version for his ninth studio album, “HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book 1” (1995).
