What's left behind the scenes

  • Cher began as a singer and is still best known in that role. Nevertheless, with the film “Burlesque” (Steve Antin, 2010), it is only her second musical in her career.
  • Julie Walters was given a day off during filming in November 2017 so she could attend the ceremony at Buckingham Palace where Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II bestowed upon her the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Upon her return, she was greeted by a choir of crew members and actors performing the song “There Is Nothing Like A Dame” from the South Pacific musical.
  • The first time in Meryl Streep’s more than 40-year film career that she has appeared in a sequel.
  • When Julie Walters first saw Cher, she rushed to her and hugged her, although her glasses got caught in Cher's white wig and had to be replaced.
  • Before starting work on the film, Lily James traveled to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, to visit Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.
  • The film is set on a fictional Greek island, but unlike the first film, it was not filmed in Greece, but on the small Croatian island of Vis.
  • Amanda Seyfried’s agent told her that the film had been given the green light on the day she returned home from the maternity ward after the birth of her daughter. Seyfried thought it was a joke.
  • Cher was officially offered the role of Tanya in the first film, but she turned it down. In this film, she played a different character, at the request of her former agent and old friend Ron Meyer, who had become head of Universal Pictures. Cher claimed she simply couldn't refuse, because Meyer stated on the phone that she had to play the role, and immediately hung up.
  • The song "Fernando" is one of ABBA's most famous hits, and also one of the best-selling singles in the history of the music industry, but the screenwriters of both films could not figure out how to include a song about a fictional Mexican hero from years gone by into a musical about modern Greece. At the last moment, when the script for the sequel was almost ready, they came up with the idea of making Fernando the hotel manager and an old acquaintance of Ruby. This gave Cher the opportunity to perform one of ABBA's greatest hits, which was not used in the first film.
