Short description
Once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company’s exodus left the city a wasteland…with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, the townspeople are forever…changed…and a small group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the computer games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2.
  • An infected woman writes the words "itchy tasty" on the glass with her finger. This is a reference to the original game, where the author became infected and gradually went insane.
  • At the beginning of the film, the heroine, Hanna John-Kamen, wonders what is worse – being swallowed by a giant snake or eaten by a man-eating shark. The first game in the franchise features both a giant snake and a flooded laboratory with sharks.
  • The film does not explain the architectural refinements of the police station building or the large statue in the background. The games provide an explanation for this – the building formerly housed an art museum.
  • James Wan was initially supposed to be the producer and Greg Russo the screenwriter, but the former left the project in December 2018, and the latter a month earlier, to focus on the sci-fi action film "Mortal Kombat".
