Short description
Mary Stuart, who was named Queen of Scotland when she was only six days old, is the last Roman Catholic ruler of Scotland. She is imprisoned at the age of 23 by her cousin Elizabeth Tudor, the English Queen and her arch adversary. Nineteen years later the life of Mary is to be ended on the scaffold and with her execution the last threat to Elizabeth's throne has been removed. The two Queens with their contrasting personalities make a dramatic counterpoint to history.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The action takes place between November 16, 1560, and February 8, 1587.
  • During filming, Vanessa Redgrave was just over 30 years old. She played the protagonist, for almost the entire time, as someone at least 10 years younger than herself.
  • Vanessa Redgrave did not know French, so she learned the title song, 'Vivre et Mourir,' by heart without understanding the words.
  • Initially, Vanessa Redgrave was cast as Queen Elizabeth, but the role went to Glenda Jackson, and she was given the leading role. Redgrave later played Queen Elizabeth in Roland Emmerich's historical film 'Anonymous' (2011).
