• Directors Tyler Nilson and Mike Schwartz met Zac Gottsagen and learned that he dreamed of acting in films. They then wrote a screenplay about his dreams and aspirations, and used their connections to film it without obtaining the necessary permits.
• The film features two former professional wrestlers, Jake Roberts (real name Aurelian Smith Jr.) and Mick Foley, who performed in the ring under the names "Cactus Jack," "Mankind," and others.
• Ben Foster was initially cast as Tyler, but he left the project at the last moment to spend more time with his wife, actress Laura Prepon, and their child. He called Shia LaBeouf himself and suggested he play Tyler, and LaBeouf agreed.
• In the scene where Zac, Tyler, and Eleanor jump from the oil platform, it was not stunt doubles, but the actors themselves who performed the jump.
