The script was originally titled "The Wretched," and Chow Yun-Fat, Paz Vega, and Catalina Sandino Moreno were intended to star in the film. However, funding could not be secured, and the project was put on hold.
Wesley Snipes contributed $1 million as bail to be released for filming.
The film's equestrian stunts were coordinated by stuntman Elbrus Urtaev, originally from Ossetia.
