- A screen adaptation of the novel of the same name (1974) by American writer James Baldwin (1924-1987).
- Director Barry Jenkins placed great importance on sound and at one time studied with sound engineer Richard Portman (1934-2017).
- Both the film and the novel it was based on make the same mistake – Beale Street is located not in New Orleans, but in Memphis, the hometown of composer, trumpeter, clarinetist, and arranger William Christopher Handy (1873-1958).
