• The film is based on Guy Burt's novel "The Hole" (After the Hole, 1993).
• During the shower scene, many crew members happily walked around naked in front of 15-year-old Keira Knightley. Her line to one of them at the end of the scene was improvised.
• Tora Birch's fee was a seven-figure sum, as she had recently starred in "American Beauty" (Sam Mendes, 1999). Her presence in the film's cast helped secure the necessary funding for the project.
