What's left behind the scenes

  • The film became part of a public campaign to abolish the death penalty in France. This campaign took place throughout the country in the 1970s. The film's director, José Giovanni (1923-2004), was himself sentenced to death in 1945, but the then-President of France commuted the sentence to 20 years of forced labor. After 11 years in prison, Giovanni was released and became a writer, screenwriter, and director. The death penalty was abolished in France in 1981.
