What's left behind the scenes

  • Joanna Hogg wrote the screenplay based on her own experience attending film school in London in the early 1980s. She and actress Tilda Swinton had been friends since childhood, and Swinton witnessed Hogg’s relationships with men during those years firsthand. Tilda Swinton, then unknown, starred in Hogg’s graduation film, "Caprice".
  • Joanna Hogg had already cast Tilda Swinton and Tom Burke in roles for the film *Souvenir* (2018), but she couldn't find an actress for the role of Julia. The problem was solved just weeks before filming began. When she met with Swinton to discuss the upcoming role, the actress's daughter, Honor Swinton-Byrne, happened to be nearby, and Hogg suddenly saw Julia in her. Swinton and Hogg had been friends for a long time, so Hogg knew Honor Swinton-Byrne, but she also knew that she had never acted before, anywhere, so the thought of casting her as Julia simply hadn't occurred to her.
