What's left behind the scenes

  • The film rights were sold to Disney even before the first novel in the series was published.
  • In the novels, Domovoy Dvoretsky is depicted as Eurasian, which helps him in various adventures of Artemis Fowl. As for the film adaptation, producer and director Kenneth Branagh always envisioned an actor of Nigerian descent, Nonso Anozie, for this role, and he was ultimately cast.
  • The involvement of Colin Farrell became known only in March 2020 – almost a year and a half after the teaser was released and three years after filming had been completed.
  • Judi Dench, a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, plays the head of the secret police in the fairy world. This is a reference to Dench's previous role as 'M', the head of the secret service in the James Bond films.
  • In 2001, Lawrence Guterman signed on as director, but was later replaced by Kenneth Branagh.
  • The language of gnomes (the writing system of fairy-tale creatures) was altered for the film, and all subsequent book printings feature this writing as it was created for the movie.
  • Filming took place in the summer of 2018 on the coast of Northern Ireland, specifically at Dunluce Castle.
  • The film took 19 years to make. It began in 2001, but didn't gain momentum until 2003 when The Weinstein Company acquired the rights. Around 2006, Jim Sheridan was confirmed as director, and he was to film based on a script written by his daughter. Saoirse Ronan was planned to participate in the project, but everything stalled again. In 2013, Walt Disney Studios and The Weinstein Company commissioned Michael Goldenberg to adapt the first two books in the series, but Walt Disney Studios executives disliked the portrayal of the main character. Kenneth Branagh was appointed director, and he tasked Conor McPherson with rewriting the script. Casting was completed in 2017, and filming began in 2018, with plans to finish a year later. Due to the scandal involving accusations against Harvey Weinstein and the purchase of 20th Century Fox, the film's premiere was postponed to May 2020. The coronavirus epidemic, as well as public dissatisfaction with the changes to the source material that became apparent after the trailer was released, convinced Walt Disney Studios to release the film on the streaming platform Disney+.
