• John Guillermin was originally supposed to direct this film, but he was ultimately replaced by Andrew V. McLaglen.
• Brooke Shields played the role of a racer's daughter who, after her father's death, decided to take his place in the Trans-African rally and was subsequently kidnapped by a sheikh. However, due to her age (Shields was 17 during filming), she was not yet old enough to have a driver's license, and was not even allowed to drive the car during filming. As a result, the filmmakers had to obtain special permission for the young actress.
