What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was released 49 years after the novel of the same name by Robert Graves (1895-1985), on which it was based.
  • Scenes with screaming were filmed among the sandy dunes near the Atlantic coast in North Devon (a district of the English county of Devon).
  • Copies of paintings by Francis Bacon (1909-1992) hang in Anthony’s recording studio. One of the paintings, “Paralysed Child Walking on All Fours,” is later echoed in the film when Rachel crawls across the bedroom floor and the image momentarily turns black and white.
