The film is based on real events from the war in Afghanistan, and it deals with murders committed between June 2009 and June 2010. American soldiers were stationed at a base in the Afghan province of Kandahar. According to the film, five soldiers were implicated in the murders of at least three innocent Afghans, but in reality, there were twelve. Twelve soldiers were charged with drug use, obstruction of investigation, murder, and premeditated aggravated murder. They were also accused of assaulting a soldier who reported the illegal killings to command. Eleven of the twelve soldiers were convicted of their actions.
