Short description
Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school — the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year — before she begins high school.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to director and screenwriter Bo Burnham, he initially wanted all the young characters in the film to communicate with each other via the social network "Facebook." When the script was shown to Elsie Fisher, the future performer of the main character Kayla, she noted that "no one communicates on Facebook anymore." Burnham included this phrase in the script and instructed the film's characters to communicate via "Instagram" and "Snapchat."
- According to Bo Burnham, Apple was going to provide free laptops and phones for the film's shooting, but its management did not like the scene where a discarded iPhone is broken. As a result, the film shows the crew's own laptops, and the scene with the broken iPhone remained in the plot.
