Short description
A family discovers that dark spirits have invaded their home after their son inexplicably falls into an endless sleep. When they reach out to a professional for help, they learn things are a lot more personal than they thought.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the school scene midway through the film, Billy – the doll from the "Saw" films, also directed by Leigh Whannell and James Wan – is drawn on the blackboard behind Josh.
  • As Josh leaves the classroom, the name of director James Wan can be seen on the blackboard (underlined twice).
  • The mask that Alice wears to enter the dream world is identical to the one used by Sandman, the master of dreams, in the comic book series of the same name created by Neil Gaiman.
  • In the school scene, the names of Yasim Osman and Leslie Borchard can be seen written on the blackboard. Leslie worked as a hair stylist for this film, and Yasim was the head of the hair styling department.
  • Screenwriter Leigh Whannell stated at the Toronto Film Festival that when he was writing the script for this film, he had a list of horror movie clichés in front of him to avoid using them.
  • When Alice puts Josh to bed with a metronome, the metronome clicks at 60 beats per minute, although it actually sounds like its tempo is closer to 85 beats per minute.
  • A woman kills a family with an M1 carbine (semi-automatic rifle), but the sound is the same as that of manually operated weaponry. Furthermore, it sounds like a single-shot or pump-action shotgun.
  • When Alice first sees the demon, she describes to Specs that its eyes are "like two black holes," and he draws a portrait of the demon. According to Dalton’s description, the demon has a red face and two completely dark spots in place of eyes. However, when the demon appears, its eyes are white with tiny pupils.
  • At the beginning, when Dalton falls, Josh runs over to see if he’s alright. While Josh is sitting on the couch playing with the newborn, his shirt is untucked, unbuttoned, and without a tie. When Josh runs to Dalton to help him up, his shirt is buttoned, tucked in, and a tie has appeared.
  • When Josh goes to check the front door, he turns on the porch light, and the lightbulb immediately explodes. Later, footage from inside the house shows the porch light is on. It’s unclear when it was repaired.
  • When the alarm goes off, Josh runs downstairs, the front door is wide open, and the screen door that was previously shown in the film is not visible. After he checks the entire house, the alarm goes off again, and he closes the door. Then there are shots inside the house where the screen door is visible again.
  • When Josh is upstairs in Dalton’s room, he goes to the dresser to get clothes for Dalton. As he bends down to get the clothes, the wires from his microphone are clearly visible.
  • When Josh walks towards the red door, on the attic in the dream world (spirit world), in the dimly lit lower left part of the screen, a person operating a haze machine can be noticed.
  • When Rainey enters Dalton’s room, the shadow of the camera operator briefly appears behind her shadow.
  • When Josh goes to Dalton’s room to wake him up, he turns his back to the camera, and the cord of a wireless microphone is visible under his jacket.
  • When Eliza and Specs present their astral projections and communication with a demon, a person with a camera can be seen walking behind the actors.
  • When Josh enters the living room after work, there are three toys on the table (a turtle, a snake, and a toy gun). In the next shot, only the snake remains. Then Josh takes a napkin and wipes his hands, and in the following shot, a new napkin is inexplicably sticking out of the packaging, and there are three toys on the table again. One shot later, neither the napkin nor the toys are there again.
  • In the school scene in the middle of the film, a drawing of Billy – the puppet from the "Saw" films, also directed by Leigh Whannell and James Wan – is on the board behind Josh.
