Actors and characters

Some scenes, supposedly taking place in Amsterdam, were actually filmed in the city of Leiden. The series' creators decided that Amsterdam looked too modern, while the buildings in Leiden have largely retained their original appearance.
Petronella Oortman lived in the Netherlands in her time, and her dollhouse is part of the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum (an art museum) in Amsterdam.
The idea for the series came to screenwriter and producer Jessie Burton when she was on vacation in Amsterdam and was looking at Oortman's dollhouse in the Rijksmuseum, after which she conducted in-depth research into life in 17th-century Amsterdam, including literature, culinary records, paintings of the so-called Golden Age (which reached its peak in the 17th century), maps, and wills.
