What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the Superman comics created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1932. The character first appeared in Action Comics, #1 (1938). Zack Snyder's film is not based on any specific storyline from the comics.
  • Before Zack Snyder took the director's chair, Darren Aronofsky, Duncan Jones, Ben Affleck, Tony Scott, Matt Reeves, and Jonathan Liebesman were considered for the position.
  • Natalie Portman, Charlotte Riley, Anne Hathaway, Dianna Agron, Kristen Stewart, Malin Akerman, Rachel McAdams, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kristen Bell, Lake Bell, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, and Jessica Biel were considered for the role of Lois Lane.
  • Matthew Goode, James Holzer, Armie Hammer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson, Robert Pattinson, Colin O’Donoghue, and Henry Cavill were on the final shortlist for the lead role. Ultimately, the choice fell on Henry Cavill, who almost played Superman in 2006 in Brian Singer's 'Superman Returns,' but the role went to Brandon Routh at that time.
  • Amanda Seyfried auditioned for the role, but her candidacy was rejected.
  • Viggo Mortensen was considered for the role of General Zod.
  • Dennis Quaid, Bruce Greenwood, Michael Biehn, and Kurt Russell could have played Jonathan Kent.
  • The word “Superman” is used three times in the film.
  • Antje Traue, who played Faora-Ul, General Zod's assistant, planned to end her acting career and dedicate herself to medicine. This was due to the failure of 'Pandorum' (2009) and the numerous subsequent rejections at auditions for other films, including blockbusters such as 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' (2012) and 'Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol' (2011). Due to a standstill in her acting career, Antje was even forced to take on odd jobs in restaurants and call centers until her agent suggested filming a video for auditions for 'Man of Steel', which the actress herself perceived as her last chance. Just two weeks later, Antje was invited to Los Angeles for further discussion of her participation in the filming. Zack Snyder believed she was perfect for the role of Faora, and despite some studio doubts, approved Antje for the role.
  • Ben Affleck stepped down as director of the film due to his lack of experience in visual effects: “The lesson I learned for myself is not to look at films based on the size of the budget, on how much money will be spent on effects, and where the filming will take place. The plot is what matters.”
  • Following the success of the Batman franchise, Christopher Nolan was brought on board to assist screenwriter David S. Goyer. Nolan held the position of a kind of creative consultant. When Zack Snyder appeared as the director of the project, Nolan transferred all his creative authority to him and focused on the film 'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012).
  • Julianna Moore, Lisa Rinna, Jodie Foster, Sela Ward, and Elizabeth Shue were considered for the role of Martha Kent.
  • Director Bryan Singer and actor Brandon Routh expressed their interest in participating in the project. Singer initially planned several sequels as a continuation of the story of 'Superman Returns' (2006), and Routh had a corresponding contract. However, Warner Bros. studio then announced that the film would be a complete reboot of the franchise. Routh continued to express interest in returning to the project until Zack Snyder stated that this film would have no connection to any of the previous cinematic incarnations of his character (Clark Kent).
  • Glenn Ford previously played the role of Kevin Costner's character – Jonathan Kent. Both were involved in competing projects about Wyatt Earp. Glenn got the role in 'Tombstone' (1993), but was forced to leave the project, while Costner played the main role in 'Wyatt Earp' (1994).
  • Connie Nielsen was considered for the role of Lara Lor-Van. Julia Ormond was also considered for the role, but declined, and the role ultimately went to Ayelet Zurer.
  • Filming in the cities of Plano and Chicago (Illinois) took place in August and September 2011 under the project's code name 'Autumn Frost.' It was kept secret so poorly that the Chicago Tribune published a full article about it on September 6, 2011.
  • Alessandro Giuliani, who plays Sergeant Sedowski, previously played Emil Hamilton in the series 'Smallville' (2001–2011).
  • The character of Whitney Fordman did not appear in the original comics. He was created for the series 'Smallville' (2001–2011), which tells the story of Clark Kent's school years.
  • British actor Henry Cavill is the first non-American actor to play Clark Kent. Before him, only the late London native Lee Quigley played the role of Superboy in the film 'Superman' (1978).
  • This is the first Superman film whose title does not include the word "Superman".
  • Director Zack Snyder used the services of Gym Jones to get Henry Cavill in shape for his role. Snyder first worked with Gym Jones during the filming of "300" (2007), and then collaborated with them during the filming of all his action films to get the actors into the necessary physical condition.
  • Amy Adams, who plays Lois Lane, previously appeared in the series about Clark Kent, "Smallville" (2001–2011).
  • The idea that the Superman logo represents hope comes from the comic book "Superman: Birthright" by Mark Waid.
  • In most action scenes, Superman's cape was created using computer graphics.
  • Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe had met before playing father and son in this film. Henry was an extra in "Proof of Life" (2000), where he received encouragement to continue his acting career and a signed photograph from Crowe, who was his favorite actor.
  • This is the third time Amy Adams auditioned for the role of Lois Lane. She first tried out for Brett Ratner's film, which was never made, and then for "Superman Returns" (2006).
  • Mackenzie Gray, who plays Jax-Ur, previously played an adult clone of Lex Luthor in the television series "Smallville" (2001–2011).
  • Superman's costume in this film is based on the costume from the DC New 52 comic books.
  • A Wilhelm scream can be heard in the film when Faora throws soldiers from the back of a C-17.
  • The monologue spoken by Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) in the trailer is taken entirely from Jeff Johns' comic book "Superman: Secret Origin".
  • Guillermo del Toro, with whom David S. Goyer worked on the film "Blade 2" (2002), declined an offer to direct the reboot due to his commitment to adapting "At the Mountains of Madness".
  • Robert Zemeckis was also considered for the director's position.
  • According to artist Warren Manser, Zack Snyder reviewed 1,500 costume design options before settling on the outfit without the famous red trunks.
  • The film features 1,500 shots with visual effects. However, many scenes on Earth utilize real, rather than computer-generated, military equipment.
  • During the fight scene between young Clark and Whitney Fordman, the logo for "Sullivan, Truck and Tractor Repair" is clearly visible on the auto repair shop building. Chloe Sullivan was Clark Kent's best friend and assistant in the "Smallville" series (2001-2011). DC Comics representatives were so impressed with this character that they included her in the official comic book series.
  • In the final battle between Superman and General Zod, the latter destroys trucks belonging to LEXCORP, owned by Lex Luthor from the comics, Superman’s antagonist.
  • The logo of Wayne Enterprises is clearly visible on one of the space satellites that General Zod destroys.
  • In the scene where the tornado is throwing cars around, and Kal-El's father is saving a dog from a car, there is an inconsistency. The wind is so strong that it lifts cars, yet the protagonist’s father exits the car (with the open car door visible behind him in the frame, inexplicably untouched by the wind) and stands calmly, directing his son what to do.
