Initially, this project was intended to be a direct continuation of 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'.
The role of Allison Scott was originally offered to Anne Hathaway, but the actress later left the project due to creative differences. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kate Bosworth, Lindsay Lohan and Portia de Rossi then competed for the lead role, but Katherine Heigl ultimately got the part.
The children playing the roles of Debbie and Pete's kids are the children of actress Leslie Mann, who played Debbie, and director Judd Apatow.
The four friends of the hero Ben Stone in the film are named the same as the actors in real life.
