This film was the first English-language project in director Mathieu Kassovitz's career.
In addition to Montreal, filming took place at the "St. Vincent-de-Paul" prison in Quebec, Canada, in the city of Laval.
There was no pool scene in the original script. Director Mathieu Kassovitz decided to add it to the film for suspense (an artistic device characterized by creating an atmosphere of uncertainty, anxiety, and apprehensive expectation).
Halle Berry broke her wrist during a scene where Robert Downey Jr. twisted her arm. Robert got too carried away while getting into character.
