• After the book, which formed the basis of the plot, was released, the film company “Warner Bros.” planned to film an adaptation with Orlando Bloom and Josh Hartnett.
• The novel was owned by the film company “Warner Bros.” for four years, after which it was bought out by screenwriters Aaron and Sam Taylor-Johnson. It soon became known that the author of the novel, James Frey, had invented some of the plot elements that were initially presented as memoirs. In 2006, Frey publicly admitted that it was not a memoir, but a fictional story. At that time, television personality and media figure Oprah Winfrey was one of Frey's most ardent fans. In January 2006, she publicly spoke out against Frey for passing off fiction as truth and profiting from it.
