What's left behind the scenes

  • The name of the palace, now the Topkapi Museum, is written with a final 'y'. The Turkish spelling of Topkapı, with 'kapı' meaning 'gate' or 'door', can only have the broad vowel 'y' in the second part of the compound word due to the principle of vowel harmony.
  • Six weeks after the premiere of "Topkapi," a similar real-life robbery took place in a New York museum. Although 22 precious stones were stolen, they were recovered within 48 hours.
