Short description
After several years of living with a cult, Martha finally escapes and calls her estranged sister, Lucy, for help. Martha finds herself at the quiet Connecticut home Lucy shares with her new husband, Ted, but the memories of what she experienced in the cult make peace hard to find. As flashbacks continue to torment her, Martha fails to shake a terrible sense of dread, especially in regard to the cult's manipulative leader.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film's title lists the main character's names. Martha is the name given to her by her parents; Marsi Mae is the name Patrick, played by John Hawkes, gave her when she joined the cult; and Marlene is the name the women in the cult were required to use during phone conversations. (All men were required to use the name Michael.)
- Filming took 20 days.
- For the role of Martha, Sean Durkin was looking for an unknown actress, and auditions were held solely for this role. Elizabeth Olsen auditioned for the part of Martha twice, and filming began two weeks after she was cast.
