Short description
Thirteen-year-old Mei is experiencing the awkwardness of being a teenager with a twist – when she gets too excited, she transforms into a giant red panda.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The number four is depicted as unlucky. The number 4 is considered unlucky in China because the word sounds similar to the word for “death” in Mandarin and Cantonese dialects of the Chinese language.
  • The film's release was planned for 2022, but, as with the releases of "Soul" (2020) and "Luca" (2021), the film was shown on the Disney+ streaming service instead of its originally planned theatrical release due to the spread of the Omicron strain. Pixar studio employees were once again disappointed by the lack of a theatrical release for a film they had such high hopes for.
  • The film's technical consultant, Susan Fong, has diabetes. In accordance with Disney's policies requiring authenticity in portraying life in all its forms, the film features two characters with diabetes, evidenced by their continuous glucose monitors, which measure glucose levels constantly (as opposed to regular measurements at the same time).
  • The temple is based on a traditional Chinese temple in Marysville, California, built by members of the local Chinese diaspora in 1880.
  • The film's director, Domee Shi, is of Chinese-Canadian descent. As with the animated film "Luca" (2021), which director Enrico Casarosa based on his own childhood memories in Italy, Domee Shi reflects her own upbringing in Canada in this film.
  • The number four is considered unlucky because in Chinese, the word sounds similar to the word for 'death'.
  • The film's theatrical release was planned for 2022, but it had to be released on the Disney+ streaming service due to the spread of the Omicron strain of coronavirus.
  • The temple was modeled after a Chinese temple in Marysville, California, built by the Chinese diaspora in 1880.
  • The film's director, Domee Shi, is of Chinese descent, and the screenplay is based on her childhood memories.
  • The number four is shown as an unlucky number, as in Chinese it sounds the same as the word “death.”
