Short description
A World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler, Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Sam Rockwell studied with a specialist to speak with the correct accent, and also studied how experienced actors like Marlon Brando (1924-2004), Ralph Fiennes, and Oskar Werner (1922-1984) played Germans. He then decided that his character should be someone like Bill Murray or Walter Matthau (1920-2000), but with a German accent.
  • Hitler speaks about the conspiracy organizer Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg and refers to him as "this pirate." In 1943, von Stauffenberg lost his left eye, the right hand, and two fingers on his left hand and subsequently wore an eye patch.
  • The film features authentic German equipment and weaponry. The same applies to the vehicles.
  • The quote at the end of the film is taken from a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926).
  • According to the director, when Gestapo officers appear at JoJo's house, the greeting "Heil Hitler" is repeated 31 times over the course of a minute.
  • At the end of the film, the characters played by Sam Rockwell and Alfie Allen are shown wearing pink triangles on their uniforms – this was how homosexuals were marked in Nazi Germany.
