What's left behind the scenes

  • The film only featured non-professional actors. For example, the main role of the unemployed Antonio Ricci was played by a turner, Lamberto Maggiorani, on the condition that he would return to the factory after filming. But there were layoffs, and Maggiorani had to continue his acting career. His wife was played by a journalist who once came to interview De Sica. And their son was played by 8-year-old Enzo Staiola, a vegetable shop courier.
  • Street shooting was sometimes carried out without any permits. For instance, to manage to film the market scene, one of the crew members had to single-handedly block the path of trams in Vittorio Square. The scene was ultimately successful, but the violator was arrested.
