Short description
In Arizona in the late 1800s, infamous outlaw Ben Wade and his vicious gang of thieves and murderers have plagued the Southern Railroad. When Wade is captured, Civil War veteran Dan Evans, struggling to survive on his drought-plagued ranch, volunteers to deliver him alive to the "3:10 to Yuma", a train that will take the killer to trial.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Tom Cruise was originally supposed to play Ben Wade. However, after he dropped out of the project, Russell Crowe's agreement to take on the role saved the project from being shut down.
  • Russell Crowe, James Mangold (director), and Katie Conrad (producer) unanimously agreed that Christian Bale would be perfect for the role of Dan Evans.
  • When Tom Cruise was still slated to play Ben Wade, Eric Bana was being considered for the role of Dan Evans.
  • The short story by Elmore Leonard on which the film is based was first published in “Dime Western Magazine” in 1953.
  • Dan Evans' (Christian Bale) pistol is a Colt 1851.
  • In Contention, the main characters encounter three marshals. The first is named Sam Fuller (the character is named after director Samuel Fuller); the second is Harvey Pell (the same name as former deputy sheriff Will Kane’s deputy in “High Noon” (1952)); the third is Will Doane (that was originally intended to be Will Kane’s name in “High Noon”).
  • The jacket worn by Charlie Prince in the film was chosen by Ben himself. As he himself says, he “looked through archival photographs where criminals resembled modern rock stars, and chose a leather jacket at the museum.”
  • Initially, director James Mangold wanted to cast Chris Christopheron in the role of Byron McElroy, but due to the latter's inconvenient shooting schedule, Peter Fonda received the part.
  • Filming took place from October 23, 2006, to January 20, 2007.
