Carmen & Lola

Carmen is a teenage girl growing up in a Roma community on the outskirts of Madrid. Like the women around her, she is expected to follow a path that repeats from one generation to the next: marry young and raise as many children as possible. That expectation is disrupted when she meets Lola, a girl from the same community who is different from anyone Carmen has known. Lola dreams of attending university and makes graffiti, and the two develop a close bond that grows into a romance. Their relationship puts them at odds with their families and the norms of their community, and both must decide how to move forward together.

Arantxa Echevarría directed and wrote the film, her first feature, and it went on to be followed by The Perfect Family, Chinas, Politically Incorrect, Undercover and A Sucker's Born Every Minute. Rosy Rodríguez and Zaira Romero play Carmen and Lola, with Moreno Borja, Rafaela León, Carolina Yuste and Juan José Jiménez among the supporting cast. The film runs 103 minutes.

Released in 2018, it holds a 7.1 rating on IMDb from around 3,900 votes and a 7 on TMDB from about 185 votes, while critics gave it 6.8 from 21 reviews. Audience and critical responses are therefore closely aligned, and the much larger IMDb vote count suggests the film reached a wider public beyond its domestic release.
