Short description
Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark, N.J., history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters start to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, whose influence over his nephew will help shape the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss, Tony Soprano.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Many Saints in the film's title is an English translation of the Italian surname Moltisanti.
  • Alessandro Nivola had no idea he would be playing the main character until the very beginning of filming. Until then, he had only read excerpts from the script.
  • Before he was cast as young Tony Soprano, Michael Gandolfini hadn't watched the series “The Sopranos” (1999-2007). The main role was played by Michael's father, actor James Gandolfini (1961-2014), and his character was named Anthony “Tony” Soprano.
  • Alan Taylor, who directed the legendary series “The Sopranos,” directed the film. The screenwriter and producer, David Chase, initially intended to direct the film himself, but family problems interfered with those plans. He chose Taylor because Taylor had directed many of Chase’s favorite episodes of “The Sopranos.” And even though the film had a different director, Chase personally attended the set every morning.
  • Michael Gandolfini had to reshoot many scenes because his character was turning out too similar to his father’s character in “The Sopranos,” and he was supposed to be playing a teenager, not an adult criminal.
  • Makeup artists deliberately gave Vera Farmiga, who played Livia, a certain resemblance to Nancy Marchand (1928-2000), who played Tony’s elderly mother in the series. Even their manner of speaking was somewhat similar.
  • Before being cast as young Tony Soprano, Michael Gandolfini hadn't watched the series "The Sopranos" (1999-2007). The lead role was played by Michael’s father, actor James Gandolfini (1961-2014), who played the character Anthony “Tony” Soprano.
