Short description
Spanish photographer Francesc Boix, imprisoned in the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, works in the SS Photographic Service. Between 1943 and 1945, he hides, with the help of other prisoners, thousands of negatives, with the purpose of showing the freed world the atrocities committed by the Nazis, exhaustively documented. He will be a key witness during the Nuremberg Trials.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In preparation for the role, Mario Casas took German lessons.
  • According to the plot, the party took place in Austria in the spring, but filming was done in Budapest in winter. It had been snowing all day before that, so the film crew urgently had to melt the snow.
  • In preparation for the role of the photographer, Mario Casas lost 15 kg.
  • During the filming of the party, the temperature was -7 degrees Celsius, and the actors had to hold snow in their cheeks to cool their breath and prevent steam from coming out of their mouths.
  • The character of Juan Negrin does not speak German. In reality, Negrin is the only Spanish actor in the film who spoke German fluently.
  • On his son's birthday, the camp commandant Franz Ziereis (1905-1945) killed approximately forty prisoners.
