Short description
Set in northern France on 6 April 1917, during the First World War, the film follows two young British lance corporals, Schofield and Blake, who are given a mission by a general. A German withdrawal has been observed, and a British attack is planned for the following morning, but aerial reconnaissance has shown that the retreat is a trap and the advancing battalion will be cut off. The two men must cross ground now held by the enemy to deliver orders calling off the assault, which would otherwise leave roughly 1,600 soldiers exposed. Among those soldiers is Blake's older brother, an officer in the same unit, and the mission has to be completed before dawn.
Sam Mendes directed and wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and also produced with Callum McDougall and Pippa Harris. It is the ninth of fifteen films Mendes has directed, following Spectre and preceding Empire of Light. George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman play Schofield and Blake, with Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden and Claire Duburcq in supporting roles; 57 cast members and 229 crew members are credited. Made for about 100 million US dollars, it took roughly 385 million worldwide.
Audience responses were strong: it holds 8.2 out of 10 on IMDb from around 765,000 votes, and 8 out of 10 on TMDB. A critics' rating of 8.4 out of 10 from 475 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
