The Tramp is an escaped convict who is mistaken as a pastor in a small town church.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot at "First National" studio – it was the last film released by this studio to feature Charlie Chaplin. This film was also the first for Charles Reisner, who later became a screenwriter. This picture was also the last film in which Edna Purviance played a leading role alongside Charlie Chaplin himself.
  • Also in 1923, Edna Purviance starred in another Charlie Chaplin film, "A Parisian Woman," in which Chaplin himself appeared in a cameo – the great comedian loved to appear in such roles in his films, striving to remain unrecognized and not be listed in the credits.
  • In 1959, Charlie Chaplin included "The Pilgrim" in Chaplin Revue, which also featured 2 other films: "A Dog's Life" and "Shoulder Arms." Somewhat re-edited and with completely new music, this film contains the song "I'm Going to Texas," sung by Matt Monroe.
