What's left behind the scenes

  • Problems arose during the filming of the sound version of the film. Actress Annie Ondra spoke with an accent, so her role was voiced by another actress. This created significant difficulties, as dubbing technology did not exist at the time. Also, the operating camera was too loud, and the noise interrupted filming.
  • Hitchcock's cameo – at the 11th minute of the film – is a man in a subway car whom a small boy is disturbing while reading a book.
  • The film was released in two versions: silent and sound. The silent film was considered lost for a long time. It was found and restored by the British Film Institute.
  • To create the scene of the criminal's pursuit in the British Museum, the so-called Schüftan method was used.
