Short description
Cowardly rogue Harry Flashman's (Malcolm McDowell) schemes to gain entry to the royal circles of 19th-century Europe go nowhere until he meets a pair of devious nobles with their own agenda. At their urging, Flashman agrees to re-create himself as a bogus Prussian nobleman to woo a beautiful duchess. But the half-baked plan quickly comes unraveled, and he's soon on the run from several new enemies who are all calling for the rapscallion's head.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In 1970, Richard Lester planned to film 'Flashman,' based on the first novel by George MacDonald Fraser (a British Scottish author of historical novels, screenplays, and non-fiction texts), with a screenplay by Charles Wood and Frank Muir. John Elder would have played the main character. The project turned out to be incredibly expensive, and it was abandoned just days before the scheduled start of filming. Lester attempted to return to the project four years later, after a fruitful collaboration with Fraser on the first two highly successful films in the Musketeers franchise. Lester concluded that it would be easier to film a movie based on Fraser's second novel ('Royal Flash,' 1970). 'United Artists' lost interest in the project shortly before filming began, but Lester managed to attract '20th Century Fox' to it in time. The film flopped at the box office, and its duration was cut from 118 to 96 minutes for release in British cinemas. Fraser disliked the film so much that he vowed never to sell the film rights to books in the franchise again.
