- The film is based on the eponymous song (1984) by the British pop duo Wham! (1982-1986), written by its member George Michael.
- Filming took place on location in London. To avoid the attention of onlookers, which could interfere with filming, many scenes were started around 2 a.m.
- George Michael (1963-2016, born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou) anonymously worked at a homeless shelter.
- Emilia Clarke sings herself in the film.
- During the audition, Ingrid Oliver was asked to improvise with Emma Thompson in front of director Paul Feig.
