What's left behind the scenes

  • Travolta initially wanted to play the role of Tyler himself, but by the time filming began, he felt he looked too old for the part and instead played the main villain.
  • Initial plans and intentions called for filming a sequel based on the second part of the novel that served as the literary source material (1982) by L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986). This did not come to pass due to the unsatisfactory reaction to the film from audiences and critics.
  • According to the film's cinematographer, Giles Nuttgens, the excessive use of color filters and a technique called the 'Dutch angle' (when the camera looks at the character from below, and the horizon is tilted) was a necessity, as he had never before or since worked with such a limited lighting budget.
  • The food on set was so unsatisfactory that John Travolta brought in a personal chef from Canada, who then cooked for the actors and crew.
