What's left behind the scenes

  • It was decided to cast a real boys' choir soloist for the role of Pierre Morange. Jean-Baptiste Monié, who played the role, was at the time a soloist with the Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc choir in Lyon. This choir also performed all the songs in the film.
  • Actor and co-producer Gérard Junot had to mortgage his Parisian apartment to help finance the project. This extreme step fully paid off, and his final fee as an actor and producer exceeded 5 million euros, making him the highest-paid French actor in 2004, ahead of stars such as Jean Reno and Gérard Depardieu.
  • The film became the highest-grossing film of 2004 in the French box office, earning over $50 million (7,240,000 tickets sold) and one of the most successful French films in history.
  • Jean-Baptiste Monié sang in the Lyon church choir for many years.
  • Throughout the film, Clément Mathieu does not set the tone for the choir. This is particularly evident during the choir's performance before the Countess.
  • The film was shot at the Château de Ravel castle.
  • When the headmaster (François Berlureau) enters during Mathieu's (Gérard Jugnot) first lesson, Le Cerf (Cyril Bernicot) stands next to him with his arms crossed. In the next shot, they are lowered. Then crossed again.
